Bootleg, in 1996 there were no promo's made by major labels on CD-R. Wikivalue, check yourself and stop scamming people.
kind of old, but just saw that you replied. Not really here to argue but to simply point out that a big majority of promo stuff is in fact professionally pressed but I will have to say that I have seen some cd-r type promo or press advance copies come on cd-r. First one that comes to mind is Jedi Mind Tricks's advance copy of "Visions of Ghandi" it was for the press only to do reviews for the album, had robot voice overs saying something like "babygrande, for press only" and actually had the version of "Rise of the Machines" with the Evanescence sample that ended up not getting cleared. That was in 2003, 2 years after the Ras Kass's "Van Gogh" set release. I own what I believe is a genuine promo copy of Van Gogh, even had Ras sign it, and it looks like a legit promo copy, but it is of cd-r quality in. The reason I believe it to be legit is because for years (around 8) I searched ebay to see if legit copy had ever been released. I came across bootlegs with track listings that varied in order and in number of tracks. I think in 2009 is when I first saw a copy the unmastered version. Had 15 tracks, plain white back cover. In 2010 is when I came across a similar looking version with 20+ tracks (mostly skits added) that I hadn't seen. I purchased that version and the quality was better than the bootleg I had heard, a couple songs varied in minor details that I had never heard and the back cover seemed to be professionally pressed, as well as the CD-R. Anyways man, im not here to try and "School" anyone but have no problem in someone trying to educate me. Although rare I do believe cd-r pressings were done by major labels and also saw a rise in the 2000s for the simple fact of cost.
Glad you brought that up... I will have to school you on some things it seems... The Ras Kass "Van Gogh" advance you are referring to is also a bootleg, that album was never released. There is a Priority promo out there that was factory pressed with a back cover only. It is ultra rare and if you buy it and get a CD-R you just have been hustled. Promo's in the 90's always were always factory pressed and generally came as a disc and back cover only. Back in the days there were people on ebay printing CD-R's at home and selling them for big bucks. Their targets were albums that never saw the light of day, so collectors would pay big bucks for them. The guy that is selling this "promo" was a notorious bootlegger on ebay and got kicked off several times before finally being suspended indefinitely. By selling authentic rare albums he has the perfect disguise to sell the tons of "promo's" he makes at home. If you're a bootlegger and if you can print a CD-R at home and sell it to gullable collector for a $30 profit then that's not bad I think...
Why would someone make a bootleg of this? Ras Kass's "Van Gogh" advance album was pressed up on a cd-r. Just saying why would some go through the hassle of bootlegging a 2 track promo to maybe get lucky and sell a copy to Cypress Hill fanatic for $31.24?
